Shiba Inu
Features

Origins
The Shiba Inu is one of Japan's oldest dog breeds, originally bred to hunt small game in mountainous terrain. Its name means "small brush" or "small dog" in Japanese, reflecting its dense coat and compact size.
After World War II the breed was near extinction but was saved through careful breeding programs. Introduced in the United States in 1954, it gained international popularity.
Today the Shiba Inu is considered a national symbol of Japan and one of the most well-known and beloved dog breeds worldwide.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Shiba Inu is known for its distinctive personality: brave, confident, independent and sometimes stubborn. It clearly expresses its emotions, sometimes with the famous "Shiba scream".
Its size ranges between 33 and 41 cm, weighing between 6 and 11 kg. A triangular head, almond-shaped eyes and a tail curled over the back are its defining features.
Its double coat is a prominent trait. The most common colors are red, black and tan, and cream.
Care
The Shiba Inu needs daily physical exercise as it is naturally very active. Walks and mentally challenging activities are important for its wellbeing.
Its coat requires regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons. It is very clean and grooms itself like a cat.
Early socialization and training with positive reinforcement are especially important due to its independent character.
Most common diseases
The Shiba Inu is generally healthy but may be predisposed to certain conditions. Patellar luxation is among the most common and can affect its mobility.
Skin allergies may appear, often manifesting as itching or redness. Regular veterinary check-ups are important.
Eye conditions such as glaucoma and progressive retinal atrophy require special attention. At Onlyfresh you will find options for medium-sized active breeds.
