Origins of the breed
The Neapolitan Mastiff has its roots in ancient Rome, where Molossian dogs were used as war dogs and property guardians. It is believed to descend from the Molossoids of Epirus and Asia Minor, brought to Italy by Roman armies more than two thousand years ago. In the south of the country, especially in the Campania region, the breed evolved naturally, maintaining its size, strength, and protective character. Its main role was to guard estates and rural villas, deterring intruders by its mere presence.
For centuries, the Neapolitan Mastiff was a rustic dog, bred in rural environments without the involvement of professional breeders. It was not until the mid-20th century that a process of standardization and recovery of the breed began, led by passionate Italian supporters who recognized its historical and genetic value. In 1949 it was presented for the first time at a dog show in Naples, marking the beginning of its international recognition. Since then, the Neapolitan Mastiff has become a symbol of power, nobility, and loyalty.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a giant-sized dog, with a height of around 70–80 cm at the withers and a weight that can exceed 70 kg. Its body is muscular and compact, covered with loose skin that forms abundant folds and dewlaps, especially on the head and neck. Its coat is short, dense, and shiny, usually in shades of grey, blue, black, or fawn. Despite its imposing appearance, its movements are firm and confident, with a heavy yet elegant gait characteristic of the breed.
In terms of temperament, the Neapolitan Mastiff is calm, balanced, and extremely loyal. It is not an impulsive dog, but rather thoughtful and aware of its surroundings. It acts as a natural guardian, showing unwavering courage in the face of threats, but rarely without reason. With its family, however, it is affectionate, protective, and surprisingly gentle, especially with children. It does not seek conflict, but will defend its loved ones without hesitation. This breed requires early socialization and firm, consistent training based on respect.
Cura
Diseases
The Neapolitan Mastiff is prone to several diseases related to its size and body structure. Among the most common are hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as gastric torsion, a veterinary emergency frequently seen in giant breeds. Heart diseases such as dilated cardiomyopathy may also occur, along with eyelid problems like entropion or ectropion due to the excess skin on the face. Regular veterinary check-ups and proper nutrition are essential to prevent these complications.
Another common concern involves osteoarticular problems, which may appear from an early age if the puppy grows too quickly or engages in inappropriate exercise. In older age, osteoarthritis or muscle weakness is common. With periodic check-ups, weight control, and consistent care, the Neapolitan Mastiff can enjoy a full and calm life, proving that beyond its imposing appearance lies a giant full of loyalty, calmness, and tenderness.
