The origin of the Spanish Mastiff dates back to ancient times, when it was already mentioned as a livestock guardian during transhumance in the Iberian Peninsula. This breed was specifically developed to protect sheep from predators such as wolves and bears, thanks to its imposing size and brave temperament.

Over the centuries, it became an essential part of rural Spanish culture, especially in regions like León, Asturias, and Extremadura, where its strength and endurance were highly valued. Emotionally, the Spanish Mastiff needs to feel part of the family or group and should not be left isolated for long periods. It is a very sensitive dog that forms a strong bond with its caregivers and appreciates routine and constant contact.

Among the main health problems of the Spanish Mastiff, hip dysplasia stands out as a common condition in large breeds. It can also suffer from elbow dysplasia and joint issues if its growth is not properly managed during the first years of life.

Another relatively frequent problem is gastric torsion, which affects many large, deep-chested dogs. To prevent it, it’s recommended to divide meals into several portions throughout the day and avoid intense exercise after eating.

As for longevity, the Spanish Mastiff typically lives between 10 and 12 years, although with proper nutrition, regular veterinary check-ups, and moderate activity, it can enjoy a good quality of life even at an advanced age. As always, prevention is key to detecting potential diseases early.
