In the early decades of the 20th century, two main types coexisted: one from mountainous areas with a denser coat, and another from flatter, more desert-like regions, lighter and more refined in build. Over time, both lines were unified until the current standard was established.

During the 1970s, the Afghan Hound experienced a surge in popularity due to its striking appearance, which significantly increased its numbers. However, this trend also created misunderstandings about its character, as many owners were unaware of its independent and demanding nature. Today it is valued as a select breed, appreciated both in dog shows and in homes that understand its unique nature.

The Afghan Hound is a tall, harmonious, and muscular dog, designed for speed. Its deep chest allows for good lung capacity, while its strong bone structure supports an agile and powerful body. One of its most distinctive features is its long, fine, and silky coat that covers almost the entire body, except for the facial area and the so-called “saddle” on the back, where the hair is short and close-lying. Regarding nutrition, it requires a balanced, high-quality diet rich in proteins that help maintain its musculature. Adjusting portions according to age and activity level is key to preserving its ideal physical condition.

The Afghan Hound is, in general, a relatively healthy breed, but it can present some specific pathologies. Hip dysplasia is one of the joint conditions that may appear, especially in genetically predisposed individuals. Cases of malformation in the elbow joint have also been described.

In the ocular field, cataracts may occur, both age-related and, in some cases, hereditary. Entropion — the inward turning of the eyelid — is another condition that may appear and requires veterinary intervention.

A particular aspect of the breed is its sensitivity to certain medications, especially anesthetics, tranquilizers, and some chemical products. For this reason, it is essential that the veterinarian is aware of this characteristic before any medical procedure.
