Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds on the planet, with archaeological evidence pointing to its existence in China over 2,000 years ago. It is believed to be descended from archaic breeds related to the northern wolf, and for centuries was used in China for multiple purposes: as a hunting dog, sled dog, temple guardian and, in some regions, also as a source of food and fur. Its peculiar blue-black tongue is one of the most distinctive and mysterious features of the breed, shared only with the Chinese Shar-Pei.

During the 18th century, British sailors and merchants introduced the Chow Chow to Europe, where it quickly attracted attention for its lion-like appearance and unusual behaviour. Queen Victoria of England was one of its first admirers, which contributed to popularising the breed in aristocratic circles. In 1895, the first Chow Chow was registered at the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom.

Today, the Chow Chow is appreciated mainly as a companion dog, although its independent character and history as a guard dog make it less suitable for people without experience handling strong-willed breeds. In the hands of committed owners and with adequate socialisation from puppyhood, it can be a noble, calm and exceptionally loyal companion.

The Chow Chow is a dog of robust and compact build, with a large and broad head, small erect ears, and a characteristic expression that can appear serious or grumpy. Its coat is one of its most striking features: dense, abundant and double-layered, particularly pronounced around the neck, forming a kind of mane that resembles that of a lion.

In terms of temperament, the Chow Chow is known for its independent, reserved and sometimes stubborn character. It requires thorough brushing three to four times per week to prevent knot formation in the dense undercoat, and during shedding periods the frequency must be increased to daily. Hip dysplasia is one of the most frequent problems in the Chow Chow, favoured by its robust build and tendency to overweight. This condition can cause chronic pain and limited mobility. Early detection through X-rays and weight management are the best prevention tools.

Another common condition in the breed are eye problems, especially entropion, a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward and rubs the cornea, causing irritation and pain. This condition may require surgical intervention. Glaucoma and cataracts may also occur.
