In fact, the German term “Pudel” refers to water and the act of splashing in it, which highlights its original role as a waterfowl retrieving dog.

The Standard Poodle was bred as a hunting dog specialized in retrieving game shot in the water. Its dense coat protected it from the cold, and its excellent swimming ability made it ideal for this task. Over time, its intelligence and ease of training attracted the attention of the European nobility, who adopted it as a companion dog.

In the centuries that followed, the breed evolved into different sizes — medium, miniature, and toy — but the Standard Poodle retains the proportions and character closest to the original working dog.

The Standard Poodle is generally a long-lived and resilient dog, but it may present some hereditary conditions or issues associated with its size. Hip dysplasia is one of the most relevant orthopedic conditions in this variety. Elbow dysplasia may also occur to a lesser extent. For this reason, it is important that breeders perform health tests on the parent dogs.

In the ocular field, cataracts, glaucoma, or progressive retinal atrophy may occur. Ophthalmological examinations help detect these conditions at an early stage.

Another condition to consider is gastric torsion (bloat), especially since this is a deep-chested breed. This condition is serious and requires urgent veterinary attention, so it is recommended to avoid intense exercise after meals and to divide food into several portions.

From a dermatological perspective, sebaceous adenitis is an inflammatory skin disease that may appear in the breed. Good veterinary monitoring and proper coat care help minimize risks.
