Origins
The Great Pyrenees is one of the oldest breeds in Europe, with documentation dating back at least to the 17th century, although its ancestors probably arrived in the Pyrenean mountain range more than four thousand years ago from Central Asia. Basque and Bearnese shepherds used it for centuries as a flock guardian on the high alpine pastures, where it had to protect sheep and goats from wolves and brown bears without human supervision.
The breed reached its greatest splendour at the French court, where Louis XIV declared it the official court dog in 1675. The nobles and aristocrats of the time valued it both for its beauty and for its function as a guardian of castles and mansions. This association with the nobility made it one of the most recognised dogs in Europe in the centuries that followed.
The American Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1933. Today, the Great Pyrenees is found worldwide, valued both as a livestock guardian on rural farms and as a family companion in urban settings, where its calm and protective nature makes it ideal for families with children.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Great Pyrenees is a giant, elegant and majestic dog with a dense white coat that may display beige, grey or pale yellow patches especially around the ears and base of the tail. Its head is large and wedge-shaped with a serene and characteristic expression. One of its anatomical peculiarities is the double dewclaws on the hind legs, considered a distinguishing trait of the breed.
Its temperament is that of a confident, patient and deeply loyal dog. Unlike many working breeds, the Great Pyrenees has an independent character: it was bred to make decisions alone when facing threats, without waiting for the shepherd's commands. This independence may make it less responsive to repetitive commands than other breeds, but also reflects a different intelligence: that of the guardian who evaluates for itself.
It is a dog that is gentle with the most vulnerable: children, small animals and elderly people. Its protective instinct activates gently indoors, while outside it may bark at strangers or perceived threats.
Care
The Great Pyrenees' coat requires regular brushing two to three times a week with a long-bristle brush and an undercoat rake. During intense shedding seasons, daily brushing may be needed to manage the hair. The white coat can stain easily, so baths every four to six weeks may be necessary.
Despite its large size, the Great Pyrenees is not a high-energy dog: its exercise needs are moderate. With one or two daily long walks or freedom in a safe enclosed space, the dog will be content. It is not recommended for running or sustained intense exercise. What it does need is space: it is not a breed suited to apartments.
Nutrition must be of high quality and specific for giant breeds, with appropriate calcium and phosphorus levels to avoid overloading the growing skeletal system. Dividing the ration into two meals is essential to reduce the risk of gastric torsion.
Most common diseases
Hip and elbow dysplasia is the most common orthopaedic condition in the Great Pyrenees, favoured by its large size and weight. Selecting breeding animals with radiological certification, maintaining an appropriate weight and moderate exercise during growth are the main preventive measures. Early detection allows conservative treatment to be established, considerably improving quality of life.
Gastric torsion (gastric dilation-volvulus) is a medical emergency that can affect large deep-chested breeds like the Great Pyrenees. Feeding the dog two meals a day, avoiding intense exercise after eating and knowing the symptoms are essential measures. Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, also has a higher incidence in giant breeds.
