Origins

The Pomeranian has its roots in the Pomerania region, an area covering parts of Poland and Germany. Originally these dogs were much larger and were used as working dogs for herding and guarding, but were selectively bred to reach their current size.

In the 18th century, this breed gained notoriety through the British royal family, especially Queen Victoria. Since then, the Pomeranian has become a symbol of elegance and sophistication, and one of the most coveted toy breeds.

Today it is known for its intelligence, energy and outgoing temperament, making it one of the most popular companion dogs worldwide.

Characteristics and aptitudes

Despite its small size, the Pomeranian has a strong personality and confident character. It is an alert guard dog with great surveillance instinct. Its size ranges between 18 and 24 cm, weighing 1.8 to 3.5 kg.

Its fluffy coat and tail curled over the back are its most distinctive traits. The most common colors are orange, cream, black, brown and wolf gray.

Care

The most important care aspect for the Pomeranian is coat maintenance: brushing at least three times a week and baths every 3-4 weeks.

Despite its small size, it needs daily exercise. High-quality dry food adapted to small breeds is essential for its wellbeing.

Most common diseases

The Pomeranian may be predisposed to certain hereditary conditions. The most common are patellar luxation and tracheal collapse. Using a harness instead of a collar is recommended to protect the trachea.
