Brittany Spaniel
Features

Origins
The Brittany Spaniel is a breed from the Brittany region in northwest France, developed throughout the 19th century as a versatile pointing and retrieving dog. It is the most historically registered hunting dog in Spain and one of the most popular across all of Europe, valued for its compact size and extraordinary versatility in different types of terrain.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Brittany Spaniel is a medium-sized, compact and well-muscled dog with a wavy coat and drooping ears. Its temperament is energetic, intelligent and very affectionate: it adapts well to family life as long as it receives enough exercise. It is obedient and easy to train, with a very well-developed natural hunting instinct.
Care
The Brittany Spaniel needs intense daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay balanced. It adapts well to a family environment but does not tolerate a sedentary lifestyle. Early training is key to channeling its instincts. Veterinary check-ups should include monitoring of joints, eyes and ears.
Most common diseases
The Brittany Spaniel may be prone to some hereditary diseases that are worth knowing about:
- Hip dysplasia: hereditary joint malformation that can cause pain and progressive lameness.
- Idiopathic epilepsy: neurological disorder that causes seizures with no apparent underlying cause.
- Progressive retinal atrophy: gradual degeneration of the retina that can lead to blindness.
