Bull Terrier
The Bull Terrier is a unique and unmistakable breed, with its characteristic egg-shaped oval head, muscular body and character overflowing with energy and personality. Brave, playful and enormously loyal, it is a dog that needs an active and committed owner willing to channel its strength and enthusiasm.
Features

Origins
The Bull Terrier was born in 19th century England from the crossing of bulldogs and white English terriers, with the initial goal of creating a more agile dog for fights, which were legal at the time. With the banning of dog fights in 1835, breeder James Hinks took control of the breed and in the 1860s presented a refined type — with the characteristic oval head, completely white coat and gentler manners — which became a show and companion dog among the English upper class.
The coloured variety was introduced later, in the 20th century, through crosses with Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Today there are two recognised varieties: the standard Bull Terrier and the Miniature Bull Terrier, identical in everything except size. Despite their history, today's responsibly bred specimens are sociable, playful and affectionate dogs, known for their canine sense of humour and their extreme attachment to their families.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Bull Terrier's head is its most distinctive feature: perfectly oval in profile, without a visible stop, with small, triangular eyes of sharp and penetrating expression, and small, erect ears. Its body is compact, with a deep and round chest, short back and muscular hindquarters. The tail, set low, is carried horizontally. The overall impression conveys power and determination in every movement.
In terms of character, the Bull Terrier is extroverted, mischievous and full of vitality. It is intensely affectionate with its family and can become very dependent. It is curious, playful well into adulthood and is known for not being able to judge its own size well. With early socialisation it can get along well with other animals, although with dogs of the same sex it can be competitive. It is not the right dog for first-time owners, as it demands constant attention and firm, consistent training.
Care
The maintenance of the Bull Terrier's coat is minimal: a weekly brushing with a rubber glove or natural bristle brush removes dead hair and stimulates skin circulation. Baths can be given once a month or when necessary. White specimens may be more sensitive to the sun and require protection in summer. It is important to regularly clean the skin folds around the head and check the ears.
The Bull Terrier needs moderate to intense daily exercise and a lot of mental stimulation: it is a dog that gets bored easily and can become destructive if it does not have enough activity. Fetch games, learning tricks and interactive play time are essential. Training should start from puppyhood, with positive reinforcement methods and a lot of patience, as it can be stubborn. Early socialisation with people, children and other animals is essential for developing a well-balanced adult.
Most common diseases
Congenital deafness is the most well-known hereditary condition in the breed, and more frequently affects white-coated specimens. It can be unilateral or bilateral. The BAER test is the reference diagnostic method and should be performed on all puppies. Responsible breeders do not use bilaterally deaf dogs for breeding.
Hereditary nephropathy, also known as Bull Terrier nephritis syndrome, is a progressive kidney disease that can appear in puppies and young adults. There is a genetic test to identify carriers. Subaortic stenosis, a narrowing at the outlet of the left ventricle, can affect the breed and requires periodic cardiological evaluation. With breeders who carry out health tests and regular veterinary care, the Bull Terrier is a robust breed.
