Bichon Frisé
Features

Origins
The Bichon Frisé has roots in the Mediterranean, with influences from the Canary Islands and North Africa. It was very popular in European royal courts during the Renaissance and was established as a breed in France, where it received the official name Bichon à poil frisé.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The Bichon Frisé is a small dog with a compact build, white curly coat and dark, expressive eyes. Its temperament is cheerful, sociable and adaptable, ideal for families with children and cohabitation with other pets. Intelligent and easy to train, it sheds very little hair and is considered a hypoallergenic breed.
Care
The Bichon Frisé needs moderate daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay balanced. It requires constant attention to its coat and early socialisation. It adapts well to apartment life as long as it receives its daily walks and play sessions. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to monitor joints, eyes and skin.
Most common diseases
The Bichon Frisé may be prone to some hereditary diseases worth knowing about:
- Patellar luxation: displacement of the kneecap, common in small breeds.
- Skin allergies: skin sensitivity that can manifest as itching and redness.
- Cataracts: clouding of the lens that can affect vision with age.
- Hip dysplasia: joint malformation that can cause pain and difficulty moving.
