Features

Origins
Spaniels are one of the oldest canine families in Europe, with mentions in Welsh texts from the 10th century. The English classified them for centuries by size: the smaller ones were cockers (for woodcock hunting) and the larger ones were springers (for their springing technique to flush game). The official distinction between the Cocker Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel as separate breeds was not established until 1902 by the British Kennel Club, although the types had been clearly differentiated since the 19th century.
Originally bred as a flushing and retrieving dog in the British Isles, the English Springer Spaniel was for centuries the inseparable companion of the bird hunter. Its stamina, exceptional nose and cheerful willingness to work made it one of the most prized field dogs in Europe. Today there are two clearly distinct lines: the working line, lighter with a more intense hunting instinct, and the show line, with longer coat and a more elegant bearing.
Characteristics and aptitudes
The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized, well-proportioned and compact dog with a gentle and attentive expression that reflects its affable temperament. Its ears are long, wide and set at eye level, covered in silky hair that forms feathering. The eyes are hazel or dark brown, with a kind and trusting expression. The coat is moderately long, flat or slightly wavy, with feathering on ears, chest and limbs.
It is a dog of open, sociable and enthusiastic character. It gets on well with children, other dogs and, with proper socialisation, other animals. It is one of the most active and tireless spaniels, with a high daily exercise requirement. It is intelligent and learns quickly, responding very well to positive reinforcement training. Its scenting instinct can lead it to get lost if let off the lead in open country without prior training.
Care
The Springer Spaniel's coat requires regular brushing — two or three times a week with a metal comb and slicker brush — paying special attention to the feathering on the ears, chest and hindquarters, where tangles are most common. After walks in the countryside, check that no thorns or seeds have become caught in the coat and ears. Baths can be given every four to six weeks. The coat should never be clipped; scissor-trimming maintains the natural appearance.
Weekly ear inspection is essential: the long, pendulous ears limit ventilation of the ear canal, which encourages moisture and infection. They should be cleaned with a dedicated cleaner and dried well after baths or exercise in water. The Springer needs plenty of daily exercise — at least one hour — and ideally activities that stimulate its scenting ability: tracking, search work, agility. Without sufficient activity, it can become anxious or destructive.
Most common diseases
Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) can affect the English Springer Spaniel. It is an inherited eye disease ranging from mild forms with no effect on vision to more severe cases with retinal detachment. Genetic tests allow carriers and affected dogs to be identified. Hip dysplasia is another common condition that can cause lameness and pain in adult dogs; radiological evaluation of breeding stock helps reduce the incidence.
Chronic otitis is the most common condition in the breed in daily veterinary practice: the long, pendulous ears create the ideal environment for infections. Regular ear hygiene and frequent checks are the best prevention. Some individuals may present epilepsy, which requires a differential diagnosis and lifelong treatment when confirmed. With regular veterinary check-ups and basic routine care, the English Springer Spaniel is a healthy and robust breed.
